A lovely expression of the famous Margaux terroir, made with purity and concentration that you'd be pleased to find in wines twice the price. 2018 was an exceptional vintage for Margaux, with a baking hot summer helping the grapes fully ripen and develop dense, concentrated flavours. To make this one, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes come from 29-year-old vines grown in the gravel-clay soils of 'Le Tertre' vineyard, where certified biodynamic methods are followed and wildflowers and grasses are allowed to grow in order to promote biodiversity. The grapes are uncrushed and fermented with ambient yeasts in cement and stainless steel, in order to allow the terroir to truly shine. After this they age for a year in a 50/50 split of new and 1-year-old oak barrels, the whole time treated with minimal chemical interventions and with a very low dose of sulphur overall. The result is a wine packing everything you want from a good Bordeaux: expect the aromas and flavours of black forest gâteau, with big hits of black cherry and dark chocolate, as well as: mulberry, some earthiness and peppery spice, red florals and wet stone. A relatively high proportion of Merlot (55%) means this wine has plusher tannins than other Margauxs and is more open in its youth, with a finely structured palate and full body complemented nicely by the medium+ acidity. Everything is balanced perfectly, including the well-integrated oak, and the finish is long and satisfying. It's drinking beautifully now, but will age gracefully over the next 10 or more years if you can keep your hands off it...
