Chignin Bergeron, Les Filles Gilles Berlioz, Domaine Partage
ORGANIC / BIODYNAMIC / LOW SULPHITE
An iconic wine - dedicated to the many women involved in Domaine Partagé over the years - that has become a collector's item owing to the humorous label that changes every year. This is a concentrated, serious wine that will age beautifully over the next 10 years, similar in style to a Northern Rhône Roussanne like Hermitage or St Joseph blancs. Gilles hand harvests and carefully select only the ripest grapes from a favourable South-facing vineyard site, and does élevage on fine lees in horizontal fibreglass eggs to contribute to the rounded and aromatic profile. This wine is packed with complexity, you get aromas and flavours of white fruits like peach, apple and pear, apricots, dried white flowers, and developed notes of walnuts, honey and straw. On the palate it is succulent and smooth with a nice medium body, low acid and a distinctive flinty minerality that lingers long on the finish.
After quitting his job as a builder after losing two fingers, Gilles Berlioz has gone from strength to strength in the past 3 decades. He tends to his Chignin terroirs with great care, using horses to plough the land, transitioning to organic farming in 2015 and recently achieving Demeter (biodynamic) certification across his 5 hectares. He vinifies the wines as one cuvée per terroir, showcasing their remarkable accomplishment, purity and delicate nature, with the very limited quantities that beautifully represent the unique characteristics of their respective terroirs.
